Short answer
The NAICS code for a machine shop is 332710, Machine Shops: machining metal, plastic and composite parts on a job or order basis, usually in low volumes, with lathes, CNC and milling machines, grinders and additive equipment. High-volume precision turning is 332721. Metal fabrication has no single code: weldments and plate work are 332313, structural steel 332312, sheet metal 332322. The SIC code for a machine shop is 3599. The SBA size standard for 332710 is 500 employees.
- 332710 is for job shops machining parts to customer orders; a shop making its own product line takes that product's code.
- Metal fabrication splits by product: plate work and weldments 332313, structural steel 332312, sheet metal 332322, railings and stairs 332323.
- County Business Patterns counted 17,156 machine shops with paid employees in 2023, employing 223,313 people.
- Manufacturing size standards count employees, not receipts: 500 for 332710, 750 for plate work.
- Machinery repair and welding repair are 811310, a services code with a $12.5 million receipts limit.

The NAICS codes for machine shops and metal fabrication
| NAICS 2022 code | Official title | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| 332710 | Machine Shops | Shops known as machine shops, machining metal, plastic and composite parts on a job or order basis. Usually low-volume work on lathes (including CNC), automatic screw machines, and boring, grinding, milling and additive machines. |
| 332721 | Precision Turned Product Manufacturing | Precision turned parts of any material on a job or order basis, usually in large volumes on screw machines, rotary transfer machines, CNC lathes or turning centers. |
| 332313 | Plate Work Manufacturing | Cutting, punching, bending, shaping and welding purchased metal plate; includes weldments. |
| 332312 | Fabricated Structural Metal Manufacturing | Structural metal products such as fabricated structural steel, steel joists and rebar assemblies. |
| 332322 | Sheet Metal Work Manufacturing | Sheet metal work other than stampings: ducts, enclosures, casings, gutters, flashing. |
| 332323 | Ornamental and Architectural Metal Work Manufacturing | Staircases, railings, fire escapes, gates, fences, gratings and scaffolding. |
All of these sit in Subsector 332, Fabricated Metal Product Manufacturing.
How to choose
Start with two questions: do you work to the customer's drawing, and do you mainly remove material or join it? A shop that machines parts to order is 332710. A shop that cuts, bends and welds metal into assemblies is a fabricator, and the product decides the code.
| If the shop mainly... | Use |
|---|---|
| Machines parts to customer drawings in low volumes | 332710 |
| Runs high-volume turned parts on screw machines or turning centers | 332721 |
| Makes bolts, nuts, screws and other fasteners | 332722, Bolt, Nut, Screw, Rivet, and Washer Manufacturing |
| Makes weldments and fabricated plate products | 332313 (the 332710 definition sends weldments here) |
| Fabricates structural steel in the shop | 332312 |
| Fabricates sheet metal in the shop | 332322 |
| Makes railings, stairs, gates or gratings | 332323 |
| Stamps metal parts | 332119 (motor vehicle stampings are 336370) |
| Heat treats, plates, coats or engraves parts made elsewhere | Industry 33281 |
| Repairs industrial machinery or does welding repair | 811310, Commercial and Industrial Machinery Repair and Maintenance |
| Erects structural steel on site | 238120, Structural Steel and Precast Concrete Contractors |
| Fabricates and installs sheet metal on site | Subsector 238, Specialty Trade Contractors |
| Makes its own line of machines or products | The code for that product, such as 333517 for machine tools |
The last row is our reading of "on a job or order basis": if you design and sell your own product, you're a manufacturer of that product, not a machine shop. Where a shop does several of these, use the one that brings in the most revenue as the primary code and list the rest as secondary codes. SAM.gov lets you list several, and federal buyers search by them.
SIC codes for machine shops
The SIC code for a machine shop is 3599, Industrial and Commercial Machinery and Equipment, NEC. SIC 3599 is a catch-all, so the Census concordance maps it to seven NAICS codes: 332710 Machine shops, 332813 Electroplating and anodizing, 332999 Other fabricated metal products, 333310 Commercial and service industry machinery, 333998 Other general purpose machinery, 334519 Measuring and controlling devices, and 336390 Other motor vehicle parts. The fabrication codes have SIC equivalents of their own:
| SIC 1987 | NAICS 2022 |
|---|---|
| 3441 Fabricated Structural Metal | 332312 |
| 3443 Fabricated Plate Work (Boiler Shops) | 332313, 332410, 332420, 333415 |
| 3444 Sheet Metal Work | 332322, 332321, 332439, 333415 |
| 3446 Architectural and Ornamental Metal Work | 332323 |
| 3451 Screw Machine Products | 332721 |
| 7692 Welding Repair | 811310 |
A SIC 3599 list therefore mixes machine shops with makers of car parts and measuring devices. The SEC's own SIC list has no 3599: machinery companies file under 3590, and custom manufacturers often under 3440, Fabricated Structural Metal Products. To convert other codes, use the NAICS to SIC converter.
How many machine shops and fab shops there are
County Business Patterns (CBP) 2023, establishments with paid employees:
| NAICS code | Establishments | Employees | Annual payroll |
|---|---|---|---|
| 332710 Machine shops | 17,156 | 223,313 | $14.2 billion |
| 332721 Precision turned products | 3,897 | 102,699 | $6.5 billion |
| 332322 Sheet metal work | 4,652 | 129,616 | $8.3 billion |
| 332312 Fabricated structural metal | 3,434 | 114,153 | $8.4 billion |
| 332323 Ornamental and architectural metal | 2,827 | 41,236 | $2.5 billion |
| 332313 Plate work | 1,726 | 47,243 | $3.0 billion |
| 811310 Machinery repair (incl. welding repair) | 22,907 | 219,835 | $16.1 billion |
Machine shops are small: 13 employees per location on average, against 33 at structural steel fabricators and 28 at sheet metal shops (our calculation). Payroll works out to about $63,700 per machine shop employee.
| Employees per location | 332710 Machine shops | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Fewer than 5 | 7,877 | 45.9% |
| 5 to 9 | 3,632 | 21.2% |
| 10 to 19 | 2,775 | 16.2% |
| 20 to 49 | 1,992 | 11.6% |
| 50 to 99 | 614 | 3.6% |
| 100 or more | 266 | 1.6% |
California has the most machine shops (2,221), followed by Texas (1,312), Ohio (1,112), Michigan (943) and Pennsylvania (901). CBP counts locations with paid employees, not companies, and it uses NAICS 2017; these codes didn't change in 2022.
SBA size standards
Manufacturing standards count employees, not revenue: the average number of people employed in each pay period over your latest 24 calendar months, including affiliates. From the SBA's Table of Size Standards, effective March 17, 2023 (13 CFR 121.201 on the eCFR shows no later change):
| NAICS code | Size standard |
|---|---|
| 332710 Machine shops | 500 employees |
| 332721 Precision turned products | 500 employees |
| 332312 Fabricated structural metal | 500 employees |
| 332322 Sheet metal work | 500 employees |
| 332323 Ornamental and architectural metal | 500 employees |
| 332313 Plate work | 750 employees |
| 811310 Machinery repair | $12.5 million in average annual receipts |
| 238120 Structural steel contractors | $19.0 million in average annual receipts |
The jump between columns matters. A 120-person shop with $30 million in sales is small for a 332710 contract but not for an 811310 repair contract, so check the code on every solicitation.
Where the code is used and what a wrong one costs
- Federal contracts and subcontracts. The contracting officer assigns one code per contract, and your size is measured against it. If you think the code on a solicitation is wrong, any interested party can appeal it to the SBA's Office of Hearings and Appeals within 10 days of its publication.
- Tax returns. The IRS list doesn't split the subsector: machine shops and every fab shop use 332000, Fabricated metal product mfg., on Schedule C, while machinery and welding repair use 811310.
- Insurance and lenders. A machining job shop, a structural fabricator and a welding repair business carry different risks. Use the code for what earns most of your revenue.
Finding machine shops and fabricators by code
Public companies are few. On EDGAR, look under SIC 3440 and SIC 3590:
| Company | EDGAR SIC | Headquarters | What it does (from its 10-K) | Revenue, latest 10-K |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Valmont Industries | 3440 | Omaha, NE | Products for infrastructure and agriculture markets, including irrigation equipment | $4.10 billion (2025) |
| Arcosa (acquired by CRH on 23 October 2026) | 3440 | Dallas, TX | Infrastructure-related products for construction, engineered structures and transportation | $2.88 billion (2025) |
| Proto Labs | 3440 | Maple Plain, MN | Custom parts by injection molding, CNC machining, 3D printing and sheet metal fabrication | $533.1 million (2025) |
| TechPrecision | 3440 | Westminster, MA | Large-scale fabricated and machined metal components, mainly for defense | $31.6 million (year to 31 Mar 2026) |
The other 17,000 machine shops are private and mostly small. SAM.gov registrations, state manufacturing directories and supplier lists from OEMs are the usual public sources. A Bebop search can describe the shops you want (5-axis CNC job shops with 20 to 100 employees, AS9100 certified, in Ohio) and return the companies and owners with the reason each fits.
Worked example: coding a mixed shop
Illustrative example. The shop and figures are invented.
Ridgeline Precision (ridgeline.example) in Michigan has 85 employees and $14 million in sales: $9 million of CNC-machined parts to customer drawings, $3.5 million of welded frames and weldments, and $1.5 million of machine rebuild and repair work.
- Primary code. Machined parts are 64% of sales ($9 million of $14 million), so the primary code is 332710.
- Secondary codes. Weldments go under 332313 and the repair work under 811310.
- Size check. With 85 employees it's small under 332710 (500) and 332313 (750). For an 811310 repair contract the test is receipts: a five-year average of, say, $13 million is over the $12.5 million limit.
- SIC. A form asking for SIC gets 3599; the IRS code on its return is 332000.
Next step: if you sell to manufacturers, read the guide to manufacturing companies for who buys and how to reach them.
