Architecture firms in Houston: 371 offices, when Texas law requires an architect, and how to choose

Houston has more than five engineering offices for every architecture office, and the city has no zoning, so many projects here are led by engineers and builders. Knowing when Texas law actually requires an architect is the first step to hiring the right firm.

Market report5 min readPublished

The Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands metro had 371 architecture offices with paid employees in 2023, employing 3,998 people at an average of $99,184 a year, according to the Census Bureau. Harris County had 309 of them. 233 had fewer than five employees and seven had 100 or more. Texas requires a registered architect or approved engineer for larger private buildings, such as commercial buildings over two stories or 20,000 square feet, and for public schools, offices and assembly buildings above set costs.

  • The Houston metro had 371 architecture offices, 3,998 employees and $396.5 million in payroll in 2023.
  • Harris County has 309 offices and 91.8% of the jobs, including all seven offices with 100 or more employees.
  • The metro has 2,002 engineering offices, 5.4 for each architecture office.
  • Private commercial buildings of up to two stories and 20,000 square feet are exempt from the Texas architecture law.
  • 951 active Texas-registered architects list Houston as their city in the TBAE roster.

This report is for developers, business owners, institutions and homeowners hiring an architect in Greater Houston, for architects and drafters weighing local employers, and for anyone selling to architecture firms. It covers the Census count, the Texas rules on when an architect is required, how to check one, and how to prospect the firms.

Houston's architecture firms in the Census count

County Business Patterns (CBP) 2023 counts establishments in NAICS 541310, Architectural Services, in the Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands, TX Metro Area (CBSA 26420).

Pay averages are our calculation, shown where a county has more than 100 employees. Fort Bend's employee count carries the Census Bureau's high-noise flag (confidentiality noise moved it by 5% or more), so it isn't reported. Harris County holds all five offices with 100 to 249 employees and, by the same subtraction as above, both larger ones.

Limits. CBP counts establishments with paid staff, not companies: a national firm's Houston office is one establishment, and sole practitioners without employees are left out.

An engineering town

The same CBP release counts 2,002 engineering offices (541330), 906 commercial and institutional builders (236220, which includes design-build firms), 337 interior design offices and 73 landscape architecture offices in the metro. The labor data tells the same story: Houston has 4,130 architectural and civil drafters and 2,360 architects. For a refinery building, a pipeline facility or a tilt-wall warehouse, an engineering firm or design-builder may lead and bring in an architect for the parts that need one. For a school, a clinic, a church or an office building, start with an architecture firm.

When Texas law requires an architect

Texas regulates architects through the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners (TBAE). Section 1051.606 of the Occupations Code exempts people who don't call themselves architects when they design these privately owned buildings:

Privately owned buildingExempt from the architecture law?
Farm, ranch or agricultural building, or storage for raw agricultural commoditiesYes
Single-family or two-family home, and its outbuildingsYes
Multifamily building of up to two stories and 16 units per buildingYes
Commercial building of up to two stories and 20,000 square feetYes
Warehouse with limited public accessYes
Larger multifamily or commercial buildingsNo: engage a registered architect or a TBAE-approved engineer

Alterations are also exempt unless they involve a substantial structural or exitway change. Public buildings follow separate thresholds, set out in TBAE's Architect Required? flowchart. Anyone working under an exemption may not use any form of the word "architect."

Houston adds one more local twist. The city's Planning and Development Department notes that Houston does not have zoning: development is governed by ordinance codes on how property can be subdivided, and those codes don't address land use. Ask a prospective firm how it handles the approvals that do apply to your site.

Checking a Houston architect

  1. Search TBAE's Find a Design Pro for the architect and the firm. The lists are updated daily and searchable by name, city or registration number.
  2. Confirm the business registration. Texas requires businesses that offer architecture, registered interior design or landscape architecture to register with TBAE every year.
  3. Ask for comparable buildings of the same type and size, and who from that team will work on yours.
  4. Agree scope before fee, on a standard form such as AIA's B101-2017 or, where a contractor is hired early as construction manager at risk, B133-2019.

TBAE's active roster, downloaded on 30 October 2026, lists 14,702 architects registered in Texas, 951 of them giving Houston as their city. A third of entries don't publish a city under the state's confidentiality rules, so treat 951 as a floor.

AIA Houston and the job market

AIA Houston, based at Architecture Center Houston, runs Find a Firm, a job search and an affiliate membership for suppliers. The Bureau of Labor Statistics' May 2025 estimates for the metro:

OccupationEmployedMean annual wageMedian annual wage
Architects (17-1011)2,360$101,440$97,590
Architectural and civil drafters (17-3011)4,130$69,680$63,120
Interior designers (27-1025)1,460$69,690$61,220
Landscape architects (17-1012)630$95,660$103,670

Drafters are 1.88 times as concentrated in Houston's workforce as nationally, against 1.04 for architects. SEC records show no listed architecture company based in the metro.

Selling to Houston architecture firms

Most Houston offices are small: 331 have fewer than 20 employees, where a principal buys. The 33 with 20 to 99 employees have a studio or operations lead who evaluates, and the seven with 100 or more, all in Harris County, have procurement and IT security reviews. Because so much local work is engineering-led, the best-placed sellers often serve both: consultants, software and reprographics vendors who already work with engineers can extend the same pitch.

Illustrative example. The company, fees and results are invented.

Bayou MEP (bayoumep.example), a mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering firm, wants architecture firms that need an MEP consultant on schools and clinics. It targets Harris County offices with five to 49 employees, 111 by the Census county detail, and narrows them to the 45 whose websites show education or healthcare work. A personal email to each principal, a follow-up with a relevant project sheet and a call earn nine meetings; two become teaming agreements on upcoming bids. Sorting the 111 by project type is the slow part, and Bebop does that research for each firm in the list.

Email to an architecture principal from an engineering consultant
Subject: MEP for [firm]'s next [school or clinic] bid

Hi [first name],

I saw [firm]'s work on [project]. We're an MEP engineering firm in Houston that works for architects on [education or healthcare] projects, and we're looking for one or two new architect partners for the coming bid season.

I can send two project sheets that show how we handle coordination and construction administration on jobs like yours.

Worth a 20-minute conversation? If you're set for MEP, a one-line reply is plenty.

Questions people ask

How many architecture firms are there in Houston?

The Census Bureau counted 371 architecture offices with paid employees in the Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands metro in 2023, employing 3,998 people. Harris County had 309, Montgomery 32 and Fort Bend 17. The count is of office locations, so multi-office firms count more than once, and architects working alone without employees aren't counted. Most offices are small: 233 had fewer than five employees.

Do I need an architect to build in Texas?

Not always. Texas Occupations Code section 1051.606 exempts privately owned homes and duplexes, farm and ranch buildings, warehouses with limited public access, multifamily buildings of up to two stories and 16 units, and commercial buildings of up to two stories and 20,000 square feet. Larger private buildings, and public education, assembly and office buildings above TBAE's cost thresholds, need a registered architect or an approved engineer.

How do I check if an architect is registered in Texas?

Use Find a Design Pro on the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners website. It searches registered architects, interior designers, landscape architects and design firms by name, city or registration number, and the lists are updated daily. Texas also requires businesses offering architecture to register with TBAE each year, so check the firm as well as the architect who will seal the drawings.

Does Houston have zoning?

No. The City of Houston Planning and Development Department says the city does not have zoning; development is governed by ordinance codes that address how property can be subdivided, and those codes don't address land use. Building codes and permits still apply, so plans still have to meet code, and the city still regulates subdivision, building lines and rights-of-way.

How much do architects make in Houston?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics put the mean annual wage for architects in the Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands metro at $101,440 in May 2025, with a median of $97,590 and 2,360 employed. Architectural and civil drafters, who outnumber architects locally, averaged $69,680. Nationally, architects averaged $106,260. The figures cover salaried workers, not firm owners.
