This page is for people in the Charlotte region looking at insurance companies for different reasons: residents who want to check an insurer or agent, job seekers comparing employers, businesses choosing a broker, and vendors selling to the industry. It gives the Census counts for the eight-county metro, separates insurers from agencies, names the listed insurer based here and explains which state regulator to use. It doesn't recommend insurers.
Charlotte-area insurance at a glance
US Census Bureau County Business Patterns (CBP) 2023, insurance carriers and related activities (NAICS 524), Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia, NC-SC Metro Area (CBSA 16740):
| Measure | Charlotte metro, 2023 |
|---|---|
| Establishments | 1,495 |
| Employees | 25,788 |
| Annual payroll | $2,930,256,000 |
| Average employees per establishment | 17.2 |
| Average annual pay | $113,629 |
| Share of US insurance establishments | 0.85% (of 176,459) |
| Establishments with 100 or more employees | 34 |
Life insurers and brokerage offices
Carriers underwrite policies and pay claims (NAICS 5241); agencies, brokerages, adjusters and administrators sell or service them (NAICS 5242). Charlotte's mix is unusual on both sides:
| Segment (NAICS) | Establishments | Employees | Average pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carriers (5241) | 242 | 15,348 | $114,054 |
| Life insurers (524113) | 69 | 9,873 | $121,406 |
| Property and casualty insurers (524126) | 94 | 3,320 | $95,311 |
| Health and medical insurers (524114) | 47 | not reported (high-noise figure) | not reported |
| Agencies, brokerages and related (5242) | 1,253 | 10,440 | $113,003 |
| Agencies and brokerages (524210) | 1,129 | 8,168 | $120,959 |
| Third-party administrators (524292) | 52 | 1,751 | $83,661 |
| Claims adjusters (524291) | 48 | 214 | $105,790 |
Average pay is payroll per employee, calculated by us from CBP. The health insurers' employee count was published but flagged high-noise by the Census Bureau (its confidentiality noise changed it by 5% or more), so it isn't shown.
Life insurers hold 64% of the metro's carrier jobs, and three life insurance establishments have 1,000 or more employees. Property and casualty, the largest carrier segment in most places, is small here. And agencies and brokerages pay $120,959 on average, above the carriers. In Mecklenburg County the gap is wider: $140,932 at agencies against $115,839 at carriers. That pattern fits large commercial and employee-benefits brokerage offices rather than storefront personal-lines agencies.
Mecklenburg and the other seven counties
| County | Establishments | Employees |
|---|---|---|
| Mecklenburg County, North Carolina | 851 | 22,469 |
| Union County, North Carolina | 118 | 593 |
| York County, South Carolina | 116 | 459 |
| Iredell County, North Carolina | 104 | 480 |
| Cabarrus County, North Carolina | 86 | 276 |
| Gaston County, North Carolina | 77 | 501 |
| Lancaster County, South Carolina | 54 | not reported (high-noise figure) |
| Rowan County, North Carolina | 42 | 142 |
Mecklenburg has 57% of the establishments and 87% of the jobs; in the other seven counties, insurance offices average three to seven employees. Lancaster County's employee count was published but flagged high-noise, so it's left out. CBP counts locations with paid employees, not companies, and doesn't include agents who work alone.
Brighthouse Financial, the listed insurer based here
| Company | Headquarters | Business | 2025 revenue | Employees, end 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brighthouse Financial | 11225 North Community House Road, Charlotte | Annuities and life insurance | $6.77 billion | about 1,400 |
From its 10-K for 2025. It also shows why "headquartered in Charlotte" and "a North Carolina insurer" differ: Brighthouse's insurance subsidiaries are domiciled in Delaware, New York and Massachusetts, and the 10-K notes that "the primary regulator of an insurance company, however, is the insurance regulator in its state of domicile." With about 1,400 employees, Brighthouse accounts for a minority of the metro's 9,873 life insurance jobs; the rest are offices of insurers based elsewhere. Brighthouse's place among US insurers is in the largest insurance companies in the US list.
Which regulator: North or South Carolina?
The license that matters is the one in the state where you live or where the risk is. For most of the metro that's the North Carolina Department of Insurance (NCDOI); for York and Lancaster counties it's the South Carolina Department of Insurance (toll-free 800-768-3467, per the NAIC's directory of state departments).
- Check a license. NCDOI's site links "Check Company License Status" and "Check Agent License Status" lookups.
- Complain. NCDOI takes complaints online or on paper; its Consumer Services line is 855-408-1212.
- Know what it can do. NCDOI says it will forward your complaint and "require the company to provide a response/explanation," check the answer against North Carolina law and require corrective action. It can't act as your lawyer, decide who was at fault or set the value of a claim.
- See the record. The NAIC's Consumer Insurance Search shows complaints, licenses and financial information for each insurer, across states.
Working in Charlotte insurance
Average insurance pay in the metro, $113,629, is well above the national insurance average of $98,628 (our calculation from CBP), and the jobs concentrate in Mecklenburg's 851 establishments. Large offices are few: 34 establishments have 100 or more employees, 20 of them carriers. Agency careers start through the Independent Insurance Agents of North Carolina, the state's trade association for independent agencies, which runs education courses for agents.
Selling to Charlotte's insurers and brokers
| Buyer | Metro establishments | Who decides |
|---|---|---|
| Agencies and brokerages with 10 or more employees | 123 | Office leader with regional or national operations |
| Agencies with fewer than 10 | 1,006 | The owner |
| Life and annuity carriers | 69 | Operations, distribution and technology leaders, often at group level |
| Administrators and adjusters | 100 | Operations and client-service leaders |
Brokerage offices in uptown Charlotte are usually branches of regional or national firms, so the local leader may influence but not sign. Map who signs before you pitch; our guide to finding decision makers explains how.
Illustrative example. Queen City Benefits Data and its price are invented; the counts are from CBP 2023.
Queen City Benefits Data (qcbenefits.example) sells employee-benefits benchmarking reports to brokerages at $9,000 a year per office. The metro has 123 agency and brokerage establishments with 10 or more employees (3 of them in size classes the Census Bureau doesn't publish, derived as the total less the published classes). If 40% do benefits work and a quarter of those buy, that's 12 offices, or $108,000 a year. It starts with the Mecklenburg offices, where 6,140 of the metro's 8,168 agency jobs are. Bebop builds that office list and identifies each office's leader.

Questions people ask
How many insurance companies are in Charlotte?
The Census Bureau counted 1,495 insurance establishments with paid employees in the Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia metro in 2023, employing 25,788 people. Mecklenburg County alone had 851 establishments and 22,469 employees. 242 metro establishments were carriers and 1,253 were agencies, brokerages, adjusters and administrators. Establishments are locations, so one company with several offices counts several times.
What insurance companies are headquartered in Charlotte?
The SEC-listed insurer headquartered in Charlotte is Brighthouse Financial, an annuity and life insurance company with $6.77 billion in 2025 revenue and about 1,400 employees, according to its 10-K. Its insurance subsidiaries are domiciled in Delaware, New York and Massachusetts. Many other insurers and brokers have large Charlotte offices but are headquartered elsewhere.
How do I check if an insurance agent is licensed in North Carolina?
Use the Check Agent License Status lookup linked from the North Carolina Department of Insurance website, which also links a company license lookup. Search the agent's full name. If you live in York or Lancaster County, South Carolina, check with the South Carolina Department of Insurance instead, because the license that matters is in your state.
How do I file a complaint against an insurance company in North Carolina?
Contact the insurer first. If that fails, file with the North Carolina Department of Insurance online or on its paper form, or call Consumer Services on 855-408-1212. NCDOI forwards the complaint, requires the company to respond and checks the response against state law. It can't act as your lawyer or decide fault or the value of a claim.
