Here's who this is for: Central Indiana residents shopping for coverage or chasing a claim, people looking at insurance careers in Indianapolis, and businesses selling to the insurers and agencies here. It covers the size of the market by county, the insurers headquartered or managed here (from filings and a state registry), how to check one, and where the buying power is. It doesn't recommend carriers.
Two counties, most of the jobs
County Business Patterns 2023, Indianapolis-Carmel-Greenwood metro (CBSA 26900):
| County | Establishments | Employees | Carrier offices | Carrier employees |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Marion | 550 | 16,685 | 104 | 11,949 |
| Hamilton | 384 | 13,648 | 83 | 8,654 |
| Hendricks | 107 | 244 | 13 | not reported (high-noise figure) |
| Johnson | 101 | 298 | 9 | not reported (high-noise figure) |
| Madison | 66 | 380 | 4 | not reported (high-noise figure) |
| Boone | 43 | 235 | not published | not published |
| Hancock | 41 | 149 | 3 | 7 |
| Morgan | 31 | 79 | 3 | not reported (high-noise figure) |
Marion and Hamilton counties hold 30,333 of the metro's 31,793 insurance jobs and 20,603 of its 20,820 carrier jobs. Hamilton County, home to Carmel and Fishers, has fewer establishments than Marion but almost three-quarters as many carrier jobs. "High-noise" means the Census Bureau published the figure but its confidentiality noise moved it by 5% or more; "not published" means there's no carrier row for that county.
Insurers, agencies and the rest

| All insurance | 524 | 1,355 | 31,793 | $93,004 |
Pay is our calculation: payroll over employees. The carrier total also includes 29 title insurer offices whose employment is flagged as high-noise. An average carrier establishment has 92 employees; an average agency, 7.
| Employees at the establishment | Establishments |
|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | 963 |
| 5 to 9 | 187 |
| 10 to 19 | 77 |
| 20 to 49 | 50 |
| 50 to 99 | 23 |
| 100 to 249 | 27 |
| 250 to 499 | 15 |
| 500 to 999 | 8 |
| 1,000 or more | 5 |
Of the 55 establishments with 100 or more employees, 34 are carriers. The metro has 0.77% of the nation's insurance establishments and a $3.0 billion insurance payroll. County Business Patterns counts establishments with paid staff, not companies, and misses agents who work alone.

Tennessee's list of licensed insurers (as of 30 September 2026) records each insurer's state of charter and main office. It shows 18 Indiana-chartered insurers managed from Indianapolis, Carmel or Fishers, among them Anthem Insurance Companies, Inc., American United Life Insurance Company, Golden Rule Insurance Company, Forethought Life Insurance Company, State Life Insurance Company and Indiana Farmers Mutual Insurance Company in Indianapolis, and Washington National Insurance Company, Protective Insurance Company and Grain Dealers Mutual Insurance Company in Carmel. The list covers only insurers licensed in Tennessee, and a brand you know may write through a company with a different name. National rankings are in the largest insurance companies in the US and the largest health insurance companies.
Before you buy, and if something goes wrong
- License: the Indiana Department of Insurance (IDOI) uses a Sircon lookup for agents, agencies and companies. Search the legal name on your policy and check the status.
- Complaint history: the NAIC's Consumer Insurance Search reports complaints, licenses and financial information by company. IDOI says the complaints it receives become public record.
- A complaint: after trying the company, file through IDOI's online portal or with its Consumer Services Division at 311 W Washington Street, Indianapolis. The insurer gets 20 business days to answer in writing. IDOI doesn't handle employer self-funded health plans or Medicare; its complaint page points you to the right regulator for those.
Jobs
Insurance in the metro averaged $93,004 per employee in 2023. Life insurers paid $112,009 and claims adjusters $106,408; agencies averaged $89,691, close to the national agency figure of $90,831, and carriers $96,633, below the national carrier average of $107,137 (our calculation from County Business Patterns). Health insurance is the single biggest employer group, which makes member services, clinical review, data and IT the common roles.
Selling to Indianapolis insurers
The buying power is at the carriers. Health and life insurers buy member and policyholder service technology, call-center quality and compliance tools, claims and enrollment systems, data and analytics, and contract staff; the decisions sit with operations, IT, compliance and procurement, and security review is part of every deal. The 994 agencies, three-quarters of them under five employees, are a separate, owner-led market.
Illustrative example. The company, rates and results are invented.
Monument QA (monument-qa.example) sells call scoring and compliance monitoring for insurers' service centers. It targets carrier establishments in the metro with 50 or more employees: 11 plus 14 plus 9 plus 6 plus 5, or 45. It keeps those that run their own policyholder or member call centers, an assumed 60%, or 27. A tailored note to each service operations leader, citing their plan types, at an 11% reply rate, gives 3 conversations; one pilot at $72,000 a year is a strong result from a list this short. With so few accounts, research on each one matters more than volume; Bebop builds that account research from a plain-language description.
