Insurance companies in Louisville: Humana's home market, across two states

Louisville's insurance industry is a health insurance industry first: 142 of the metro's 229 carrier establishments are health and medical insurers, and Humana's head office is downtown. Because the metro crosses the Ohio River, you may also need to check a company with two state regulators.

The Census Bureau published the Oldham, Nelson and Bullitt employee totals but flagged them as high-noise (its confidentiality noise moved them by 5% or more), so they're left out. Jefferson County has 85% of the metro's insurance jobs. The Indiana counties in the table add 135 establishments, mostly small.

Health insurers lead

Health insurers are 62% of the metro's carrier establishments; their combined employee total is flagged as high-noise, so we don't report it. Property and casualty and life insurers are small here by comparison. Third-party administrators, which process claims and run plans for insurers and employers, average about 65 employees per establishment. Statewide, Kentucky had 2,342 insurance establishments and 32,165 employees.

Humana

Humana's 10-K for 2025 gives its principal executive office as the Humana Building, 101 East Main Street, Louisville. Its key administrative functions are in Louisville; Arlington, Virginia; and Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Humana is the only SEC-listed insurer with a head office in the metro. Health insurers rank differently from property and casualty groups; see the largest health insurance companies and the largest insurance companies.

Checking an insurer or agent

Which regulator you use depends on where you live and where the company is licensed:

  • Kentucky: the Department of Insurance, part of the Public Protection Cabinet, has a company search (by name, NAIC number, group, entity type, city or state, active or inactive) and an agent search, and takes complaints online.
  • Indiana (Clark, Floyd and Harrison counties): the Indiana Department of Insurance lets you see a list of licensed insurance companies, file a complaint and see the enforcement actions it has taken.
  • Any state: the NAIC's Consumer Insurance Search shows an insurer's complaints, licences and financial health.

For a Medicare plan, check the plan's details with Medicare as well as the state.

Working in Louisville insurance

Carrier jobs paid $108,551 on average in 2023, well above agencies at $83,221. With only 25 establishments of 100 or more employees and three of 1,000 or more, a few employers set the market. Agency work is spread across 676 small offices on both sides of the river.

Local networks: One Louisville, the metro chamber of commerce and economic development organization, and Big I Kentucky, the independent agents' association, which runs advocacy in Frankfort and Washington.

Worked example: provider directory checks

Illustrative example. The service, prices and rates are invented; the counts are from the Census table above.

Derby City Directory Check (derbycitydirectory.example) calls doctors' offices to confirm health plan provider listings.

  1. List: 142 health insurer establishments and 45 administrators. Assume they belong to about 40 companies with directories to maintain.
  2. Arithmetic: reaching a network or provider data leader at 60% gives 24 conversations. If 15% run a pilot, that's 4; 2 contracts at $90,000 a year bring $180,000.
  3. Expect a long cycle: at the largest health insurer, procurement and security review come before a pilot.

Mapping who owns provider data at each plan is the slow part; Bebop researches each account in a list and suggests the contact.
