Insurance companies in Texas: the largest insurance workforce in the US, the insurers based here and what TDI's complaint file shows

More people work in insurance in Texas than in any other state, and Texas publishes more about its insurance market than most: every licensed agency, every licensed agent and every complaint its regulator closes. That open data is the best way to check a company, and the best way to map the market if you sell to it.

It doesn't rank insurers for consumers. For metro detail, see Dallas and San Antonio.

Checking a Texas insurer or agent

  1. Find the legal company on the declarations page; it may differ from the brand.
  2. Look up the company. TDI points consumers to the NAIC's Consumer Insurance Search "to get reports on complaints, financials, and licensing," and its reports tool lists every authorized insurance company in Texas.
  3. Check the agent with TDI's agent lookup, or in its open data set of licensed agents and adjusters.
  4. Compare complaints. TDI's data set of complaint indexes and policy counts sets each company's confirmed complaints against its policies in force, by line.
  5. Get help. Call TDI's Consumer Help Line, 800-252-3439, or file online.

Licensed agencies, agents and jobs

The Independent Insurance Agents of Texas serves agency owners, and the Insurance Council of Texas, a property and casualty insurers' trade association, publishes a member company directory.

Illustrative example. Lone Star Policy Check and its price are invented; the agency counts are from TDI's open data.

Lone Star Policy Check (lonestarcheck.example) sells a coverage-comparison tool to agencies at $2,400 a year. Its first market is agencies in Houston, Dallas and San Antonio: 3,928 licensed agencies. If 30% fit (personal lines, five or more staff) and 10% of those buy, that's 118 agencies and $283,200 a year. Bebop turns that segment into a contact list with a reason to call each agency.

Next step: compare Texas's insurers with the national leaders in the largest insurance companies list.
