Manufacturing companies in California: 35,300 plants, what they make and where they are

California has more manufacturing establishments than any other state, one in eight in the US, but they're two different economies: Southern California's dense web of small metal, food and apparel shops, and the Bay Area's high-paying electronics and instrument makers. A useful list starts by picking one.

A few finer industries explain the pay differences. Navigational, measuring and control instruments (3345) employ 79,476 people at 919 establishments; aerospace products (3364) 56,575 at 347; medical equipment and supplies (3391) 58,034 at 1,395; semiconductors and components (3344) 49,940 at 942; and pharmaceuticals (3254) 53,459 at 491. Beverage makers (3121) run 2,529 establishments, including 1,714 wineries and 561 breweries. Fabricated metal has the most establishments of any subsector, 6,127 averaging 20 employees: the machine shops and fabricators that supply everyone else.

In broader bands: 26,215 establishments have 1 to 19 employees, 6,862 have 20 to 99, and 2,223 have 100 or more. The 271 establishments with 500 or more employees employ at least 179,500 people between them.

Where the plants are

From the same year's county file, the counties with the most manufacturing establishments:

CountyEstablishmentsEmployeesAverage pay
Los Angeles10,122292,916$77,197

Ventura86825,188$80,926
Sacramento76021,153$68,225

Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, San Bernardino and Riverside counties hold 20,701 establishments, 59% of the state. Santa Clara and Alameda have fewer but larger plants (47 and 54 employees on average) and the highest pay, reflecting electronics, instruments and vehicles. In the Central Valley, Fresno County's 566 establishments average 49 employees, and food manufacturers employ about half of its 27,980 manufacturing workers. The county figures sum to 35,297, three fewer than the state total, because a few establishments aren't assigned to a county.

What the count leaves out

County Business Patterns counts establishments with paid employees, not companies: a manufacturer with plants in Fremont and Lathrop counts twice, and its headquarters may be classified as a management office rather than manufacturing. Owner-run shops with no employees aren't counted. Contract manufacturers are counted by what they make, and companies that design products but outsource production are usually counted elsewhere. Employment is the week of March 12, 2023, which understates seasonal food processing that peaks in summer and fall.

Finding and checking California manufacturers

California Manufacturers and Technology AssociationThe statewide manufacturers' association
GO-Biz California CompetesThe state tax credit for companies locating or expanding in California
SEC EDGARFilings and plant locations for public manufacturers

To vet a supplier:

  1. Confirm the entity is active in bizfile and matches the name on the quote.
  2. Ask for certifications that fit the product: ISO 9001 for general quality, AS9100 for aerospace, ISO 13485 for medical devices, and food safety audits for food. Check each certificate with the body that issued it.
  3. Visit the plant or ask for a video walk-through of the line that will make your part.
  4. Test capacity with a first article or pilot order before committing volume, and call two customers in your industry.

California gives equipment sellers a real number to lead with. Under Revenue and Taxation Code section 6377.1 and Regulation 1525.4, businesses primarily engaged in NAICS 3111 to 3399 pay 3.9375 percentage points less sales and use tax on qualifying manufacturing and R&D equipment bought through 30 June 2030, claimed on form CDTFA-230-M. The California Competes Tax Credit is another expansion signal: GO-Biz says over $180 million is available each fiscal year, with application periods from 4 to 25 January 2027 and from 1 to 15 March 2027. For the national picture, see the guide to manufacturing companies; for comparison with a heavy-industry state, see manufacturing companies in Ohio.

Illustrative example. The seller, project size and win rate are invented; the counts and the exemption rate are from the sources above.

Valley Line Automation (valleyline.example) installs robotic case packing for food plants. Its targets are the 504 California food manufacturing establishments with 50 to 249 employees: big enough to run packaging lines all day, small enough that a robot cell is a board-level decision. On a $400,000 cell, the partial exemption cuts the sales tax bill by $15,750 (3.9375% of $400,000), which Valley Line shows on every quote. Winning 2% of the 504, about 10 projects a year, is $4 million in installations. It starts with plants posting packaging-line jobs it can't fill, a sign that labor, not demand, is the constraint. Bebop finds plants that match a description like that and drafts the first email.

Email to a food plant operations manager
Subject: [company]'s packaging line openings

Hi [first name],

I saw [company] has had [number] packaging roles open at your [city] plant for a while. Most mid-size food plants we work with find end-of-line packing is the hardest shift to staff.

We install robotic case packing that fits existing lines, and on a typical $400,000 cell California's partial sales tax exemption saves about $15,750 on its own.

Would a 20-minute look at your line on [day] be useful?
