Minnesota against the other device states
County Business Patterns 2023, NAICS 3391 (medical equipment and supplies) plus 334510 (electromedical and electrotherapeutic apparatus), state of Minnesota:
| Measure (2023) | Minnesota | United States |
|---|---|---|
| Establishments | 312 | 9,703 |
| Employees | 32,164 | 401,996 (sum of states) |
| Annual payroll | $2,898,580,000 | $36,055,171,000 (sum of states) |
| Average employees per establishment | 103.1 | 41.4 |
| Average annual pay | $90,119 | $89,690 |
| Share of US establishments | 3.22% | 100% |
| Rank among states by establishments | 7th |
Ranked by employees in the same state file, Minnesota is second, behind California (84,094) and ahead of Florida (23,486) and Massachusetts (21,489); that ranking is our calculation. The US employee and payroll totals are sums of the state figures.
| Employees per establishment | Establishments |
|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | 97 |
| 5 to 9 | 50 |
| 10 to 19 | 40 |
| 20 to 49 | 37 |
| 50 to 99 | 24 |
| 100 to 249 | 36 |
| 250 to 499 | 11 |
| 500 to 999 | 11 |
| 1,000 or more | 6 |
In broader bands, 187 establishments have 1 to 19 employees, 61 have 20 to 99 and 64 have 100 or more. Seventeen have 500 or more.
What Minnesota makes
| Product group (NAICS) | Establishments | Employees |
|---|---|---|
| Surgical and medical instruments (339112) | 82 | 12,555 |
| Electromedical and electrotherapeutic apparatus (334510) | 52 | 11,942 |
| Surgical appliances and supplies (339113) | 72 | 5,566 |
| Dental laboratories (339116) | 79 | 886 |
| Ophthalmic goods (339115) | 21 | not reported (high-noise figure) |
| Dental equipment and supplies (339114) | 6 | 24 |
The ophthalmic employee count was published but flagged as high-noise (noise added for confidentiality moved it by 5% or more). The Census Bureau adds that noise separately to state and metro figures, so the state and Twin Cities numbers for one code don't always reconcile; the metro's instruments count, for example, comes out slightly above the state's. Dental laboratories are a quarter of the establishments but under 3% of the jobs, so strip them out of any list built on the Census code if you want device makers.
County Business Patterns counts establishments with paid employees, not companies, and leaves out the self-employed. A company's headquarters or research center may be classified outside these codes.
Where the FDA-registered sites are
Owners and operators of establishments that produce or distribute devices for the US market register each one with FDA every year. The weekly registration file of 25 October 2026 lists 672 Minnesota establishments belonging to 530 owner-operators.
| County | FDA-registered device establishments |
|---|---|
| Hennepin | 297 |
| Ramsey | 94 |
| Anoka | 72 |
| Carver | 54 |
| Dakota | 45 |
| Olmsted | 15 |
| Washington | 15 |
| Scott | 12 |
| Sherburne | 10 |
| Rest of the state | 58 |
County assigned from each registration's ZIP code. "Rest of the state" counts the other counties, including the Twin Cities metro's smaller ones.
Outside the Twin Cities metro there are 58 registrations, 44 of them manufacturers or contract manufacturers. Rochester has 15, St. Cloud 7 and Dassel 4, with Red Wing, Wabasha, Winona and Princeton at 2 each.
| Activity on the FDA registration | Minnesota establishments |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer | 372 |
| Contract manufacturer | 224 |
| Specification developer | 184 |
| Complaint file establishment | 115 |
| Repackager or relabeler | 81 |
| US manufacturer of export-only devices | 40 |
| Contract sterilizer | 12 |
The largest owners
| Owner-operator (as registered with FDA) | Minnesota registrations | Of which manufacturing |
|---|---|---|
| Medtronic, Inc. | 19 | 14 |
| Beckman Coulter, Inc. | 14 | 10 |
| Abbott Laboratories | 12 | 12 |
| Coloplast Corp. | 11 | 9 |
| 3M Company | 11 | 7 |
| Boston Scientific Corporation | 7 | 5 |
| Stryker Corp. | 6 | 5 |
| STERIS Corporation | 5 | 2 |
| DiaSorin Inc. | 5 | 4 |
| GN Hearing A/S | 5 | 5 |
"Manufacturing" means the registration lists manufacturer or contract manufacturer among its activities.
The filings of two of these add context. Medtronic's 10-K says its principal executive office is in Ireland and its main operational offices are in the Minneapolis metro. Boston Scientific's 10-K, filed from Marlborough, Massachusetts, lists Minnesota among the locations of its principal manufacturing facilities and reports that it bought out leases on land and office and lab space in Maple Grove for $205 million in late 2025.
Minnesota-headquartered public device companies include Solventum (Maplewood, $8,325 million of 2025 net sales), Inspire Medical Systems (Golden Valley, $912.0 million), Tactile Systems Technology and CVRx in Minneapolis, and, outside the core metro, Electromed in New Prague, which reported $73.8 million of net revenue for the year to June 2026.
Selling to Minnesota device companies
| Establishment size | Count | Who usually decides | What they buy |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 19 employees | 187 | Founder or CEO, head of engineering | Prototyping, testing, regulatory help, contract manufacturing |
| 20 to 99 | 61 | Operations and quality leaders | Components, validation, quality systems, sterilization |
| 100 or more | 64 | Supplier quality, strategic sourcing, plant leadership | Qualified-supplier contracts, automation, capacity |
The 64 large sites are where the volume is, but getting on an approved-supplier list means audits and first-article inspections. The 61 mid-sized sites move faster and are often contract manufacturers that serve the large ones.
Illustrative example. The company, prices and results are invented; the counts are from the FDA file.
Prairie Validation (prairievalidation.example) runs sterilization validation and package testing. It targets Minnesota's 224 registered contract manufacturers, keeps those whose listings include sterile devices, an illustrative 40% or about 90 sites, and contacts the quality manager and the operations director at each: 180 people, including the 44 manufacturing sites outside the metro that are a long drive from most labs. Six new clients a year at $50,000 is $300,000. Bebop can build that list from a plain description and research each site; for structuring it, see how to build a prospect list.

Questions people ask
How many medical device companies are in Minnesota?
Census County Business Patterns counted 312 medical device manufacturing establishments in Minnesota in 2023, employing 32,164 people. FDA's October 2026 registration file lists 672 registered device establishments in the state, owned by 530 companies; the FDA count is higher because it includes specification developers, relabelers and complaint-handling sites as well as factories. Both count sites, not companies.
Why does Minnesota have so many medical device companies?
The public data show the result rather than the cause: Minnesota's 312 device establishments average 103.1 employees, against 41.4 nationally, and the state has more device manufacturing jobs than any state except California. Large anchor companies such as Medtronic, which runs its main operational offices in the Minneapolis metro, sit at the center of a cluster of suppliers and contract manufacturers.
Which companies have the most medical device sites in Minnesota?
In FDA's October 2026 registration file, Medtronic has 19 registered Minnesota establishments, Beckman Coulter 14, Abbott Laboratories 12, and Coloplast and 3M 11 each. Boston Scientific has 7 and Stryker 6. These are FDA registrations, so one campus can hold several, and a registration may cover a sales, complaint-handling or design site rather than a factory.
Are there medical device companies outside the Twin Cities?
Yes. FDA's registration file lists 58 Minnesota device establishments outside the Twin Cities metro, 44 of them manufacturers or contract manufacturers. Rochester has 15, St. Cloud 7 and Dassel 4, with Red Wing, Wabasha, Winona and Princeton at 2 each. Electromed, a listed device maker, is headquartered in New Prague.
What do medical device jobs pay in Minnesota?
Census County Business Patterns puts average annual pay at Minnesota's medical device manufacturing establishments at $90,119 in 2023: a $2.90 billion payroll across 32,164 employees. The US average for the same codes, from the sum of state figures, is $89,690. The figure covers all employees on payroll, from production to engineering, and excludes the self-employed.
