Pharmaceutical companies in Boston: the Seaport, Kendall Square and the plants beyond Route 128

Boston's drug industry is mostly offices and labs in two cities, with the plants spread out along Route 128, Interstate 495 and into New Hampshire. Where a company sits tells you a lot about what it does and who it hires.

Market report6 min readPublished

The Boston-Cambridge-Newton metro had 130 pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing establishments in 2023, employing 14,048 people at an average annual pay of $146,055 (Census County Business Patterns). It also had 663 biotechnology R&D establishments with 33,420 employees. Vertex, Ironwood and Rhythm are headquartered in the city of Boston; Biogen, Alnylam, Sarepta and Moderna in Cambridge, according to their 10-Ks. FDA's file lists 101 registered drug sites in the metro.

  • Biotech R&D establishments (663) outnumber drug plants (130) about five to one in the metro.
  • Vertex, at 50 Northern Avenue, is the largest drugmaker headquartered in Boston itself: $12.0 billion of 2025 revenue.
  • Middlesex County has 85 of the 130 plants; Rockingham County, New Hampshire, adds 5 with 1,826 jobs.
  • Framingham has the most FDA-registered drug sites (11), then Cambridge (7) and Boston (6).
  • 31 plants have 100 or more employees; half have fewer than 20.

This guide is for people looking for drug companies around Boston: scientists and technicians choosing employers, contract manufacturers and suppliers looking for partners, and sellers building a territory. It covers the Census Bureau's Boston-Cambridge-Newton metro, which runs from Plymouth County to Rockingham and Strafford counties in New Hampshire. For the statewide picture, see the Massachusetts pharmaceutical market report.

Where Boston's drug companies sit

Headquarters cluster in two places. In the city of Boston they're in the Seaport, the Financial District and the Back Bay; across the river they're around Kendall Square. Each address below is from the cover of the company's 2025 Form 10-K.

The suburbs hold the rest of the larger listed names: Lantheus in Bedford ($1,541.6 million, 1,193 employees), Collegium in Stoughton ($780.6 million), Repligen in Waltham ($738.3 million, about 2,000 employees), Organogenesis in Canton ($564.2 million) and Keros in Lexington ($244.1 million). SEC EDGAR shows 113 listed companies in the drug and biological product codes (SIC 2833 to 2836) with a business address in the metro. EDGAR's address can lag a move: it still files Vericel under Burlington and Akebia under Waltham, while both 10-K covers give Cambridge.

What the Census count covers

The Census Bureau doesn't publish the 1,000 or more cell for this metro; the 1 is the total less the published classes. By county, Middlesex has 85 establishments and 7,000 employees, Norfolk 13 and 2,056, Suffolk 13 and 1,589, Essex 11 and 1,460, and Rockingham County, New Hampshire, 5 and 1,826. Plymouth County's 3 establishments have an employee total that's not reported (high-noise figure): the Census Bureau published it, but the noise it adds for confidentiality moved it by 5% or more.

By six-digit code, 69 establishments make finished-dose pharmaceuticals (325412, 5,681 employees) and 37 make biological products such as vaccines, blood products and gene therapies (325414, 5,423 employees). The rest make medicinal chemicals (14) and in-vitro diagnostic substances (10).

What NAICS 3254 leaves out

CBP counts establishments with paid employees, not companies, and leaves out the self-employed. Code 3254 counts only manufacturing sites. A headquarters office, a research lab and a distribution center are each classed in their own industry, even when the same company owns all three. That matters more in Boston than almost anywhere: the same 2023 data shows 663 biotechnology R&D establishments (NAICS 541714) with 33,420 employees, and 108 drug wholesale establishments (NAICS 424210) with 16,681. Most of the companies in the tables above appear in those codes, not in 3254. The biotech companies in Boston report covers the lab side.

The registered manufacturing sites

FDA's Drug Establishments Current Registration Site (DECRS) lists sites that make, prepare, pack or test drugs for the US market. Our count of the 30 October 2026 download for the metro's counties found 101 registrations: 61 that make finished drugs or active ingredients (about 44 registrants, since Genzyme alone has seven in Framingham), 12 medical gas suppliers, 16 testing labs, 7 packers or relabelers, and 5 others, mostly PET imaging drugs made at hospitals such as Massachusetts General.

Inside the city, the registered makers are Vertex, EMD Serono, MassBiologics and Spectrum Pharmaceuticals, with Catalent Massachusetts across the Mystic in Chelsea. Further out the file lists a Wyeth BioPharma site in Andover (registered to Wyeth Pharmaceuticals LLC, "a subsidiary of Pfizer Inc."), Shire Human Genetic Therapies in Lexington, ModernaTX in Norwood, Lantheus in North Billerica, Emergent BioSolutions in Canton, Sun Pharmaceutical in Billerica, Cambridge Isotope Laboratories in Andover and Tewksbury, and Lonza Biologics in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. A registration is the company's own filing, not an FDA approval.

Finding work at a Boston drug company

The employer types hire differently:

  • Commercial headquarters (Vertex, Biogen, Moderna) hire across research, medical, commercial and corporate roles, and post openings on their own career sites.
  • Clinical-stage biotechs with 50 to 250 people hire scientists in small waves, often after a financing.
  • Plants and contract manufacturers (Catalent in Chelsea, Lonza in Portsmouth, the Andover and Framingham biologics sites) hire manufacturing, quality and engineering staff, and pay the $146,055 average that CBP records across all plant jobs.

MassBio, the state's biotechnology council, says it has more than 1,700 members, and runs a member directory and a career center. Before you sign on with a contract manufacturer or supplier, check its FDA inspection and recall history on FDA's Data Dashboard. Wholesale distributor licences are held by the Massachusetts Office of Health and Human Services and, for the Rockingham and Strafford sites, the New Hampshire Board of Pharmacy, according to FDA's list of state licensing agencies.

Worked example: a validation consultancy

Illustrative example. The firm and its prices are invented; the counts come from CBP 2023 and FDA's registration file.

Mystic Validation (mysticvalidation.example) commissions and qualifies cleanrooms and equipment.

  1. Build the list. The 61 registered manufacturing sites belong to about 44 registrants. Add Census's 31 plants with 100 or more employees as a check on size.
  2. Do the arithmetic. Reaching a quality or engineering lead at half of the 44 registrants gives 22 conversations. If 1 in 5 has a line expansion or new suite within a year, that's 4 projects; winning 2 at $120,000 each brings $240,000.
  3. Time it. A new building, a facility lease or a product approval in a 10-K or press release signals a qualification project months ahead.

Tracking those signals across 44 companies by hand is the slow part; Bebop researches each account in a list and drafts the first message.
