Short answer
The Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia metro had 14 pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing establishments in 2023, employing 1,721 people at an average annual pay of $74,289 (Census County Business Patterns). North Carolina as a whole had 78 establishments and 24,370 employees. FDA's registration file lists 36 drug establishments in the metro, including Eli Lilly in Concord, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals in Monroe and Prinston Laboratories in Charlotte.
- Iredell and Mecklenburg counties have 4 drug manufacturing establishments each.
- Nine of the 14 establishments make finished dose pharmaceuticals, with 1,261 employees.
- Half the metro's 24 FDA manufacturing registrations are medical gas suppliers, by our count of firm names.
- Only one SEC-listed company in the drug codes, Adaptin Bio, gives a Charlotte headquarters.
On this page
This page is for job seekers, suppliers and sellers asking which drug companies operate around Charlotte. The numbers are small enough that the honest answer is a short list of sites plus a pointer to the state figures in the North Carolina pharmaceutical market report. For scale, the Raleigh-Cary and Durham-Chapel Hill metros together had 26 drug manufacturing establishments and 9,500 employees in the same Census data.
The Census count
County Business Patterns (CBP) 2023, NAICS 3254 (Pharmaceutical and Medicine Manufacturing), Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia, NC-SC Metro Area (CBSA 16740):
| Measure (2023) | Charlotte metro |
|---|---|
| Establishments | 14 |
| Employees | 1,721 |
| Annual payroll | $127,852,000 |
| Average employees per establishment | 122.9 |
| Average annual pay | $74,289 |
| Share of US establishments | 0.48% of 2,901 |
The Census Bureau publishes only three size classes for the metro: 3 establishments with 1 to 4 employees, 3 with 5 to 9 and 3 with 100 to 249. The rest are withheld. Iredell and Mecklenburg counties have 4 establishments each; both employee totals were published but flagged high-noise (the Bureau's confidentiality noise moved them by 5% or more), so they're not reported here. Nine establishments make finished dose pharmaceuticals (1,261 employees) and four make medicinal chemicals and botanicals.
These are establishments with paid staff, not firms, and self-employed owners aren't counted. Distribution is larger than manufacturing here by count: the metro has 60 drug wholesale establishments (NAICS 424210) with 853 employees.
The sites in FDA's register
FDA's Drug Establishments Current Registration Site (DECRS) is the agency's public list of registered drug sites. Our count for the metro's 11 counties from the download on 30 October 2026: 36 registrations (33 in North Carolina, 3 in South Carolina). Of those, 24 list manufacturing, but 12 of the 24 are industrial gas suppliers such as Airgas and Linde. Six only pack, label or repack, five are medicated animal feed mills and one is a sterilizer.
The drug manufacturers on the list include:
| Registrant | Town | Registered operations |
|---|---|---|
| Eli Lilly and Company | Concord | Analysis, label, manufacture, pack |
| Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Inc., USA | Monroe | Analysis, label, manufacture, pack, sterilize |
| Prinston Laboratories (Generics Bidco II) | Charlotte | Two sites: manufacture, analysis, label, pack |
| Cosette Pharmaceuticals NC Laboratories | Lincolnton | Analysis, label, manufacture, pack |
| Bestco | Mooresville | Analysis, manufacture, pack |
| Livent USA | Bessemer City | API manufacture |
| Cardinal Health 414 | Charlotte | Manufacture, PET drug production |
Lilly's 10-K lists North Carolina among the states with its major production sites. Being on the list means the company registered, not that FDA approved anything.
Listed companies
SEC EDGAR finds one listed company in SIC codes 2833 to 2836 with a metro address: Adaptin Bio, quoted over the counter, whose 10-K cover gives 3540 Toringdon Way, Charlotte. It reported no product revenue. The large drugmakers with sites here are headquartered elsewhere; see the largest pharmaceutical companies.
Checking and selling
- Licences. FDA lists the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services as the agency that licenses wholesale drug distributors in the state, and South Carolina's Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation for the metro's York, Lancaster and Chester counties.
- Compliance. FDA's Data Dashboard shows each firm's inspections, warning letters and recalls.
- Introductions. NCLifeSci, the North Carolina Life Sciences Organization, is the statewide trade group, and the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance covers business growth in the region.
With about a dozen manufacturing registrations outside the gas suppliers, this is account-based selling: name the site head, quality lead and engineering lead at each, and treat the rest of North Carolina as the territory.
Illustrative example. A GMP pest control firm (piedmontgmp.example) wants regulated sites. The seven manufacturers above plus the six packagers make 13 accounts. Reaching the facilities or quality lead at 10 of them and winning 3 contracts at $9,000 a year gives $27,000, a start that only becomes a territory once the Triangle is added.
