Tech companies in Los Angeles: two counties, two tech economies and 9,803 sites to choose from

Los Angeles is the third-largest US metro for tech establishments, but it doesn't look like a tech town because the work is spread across 9,803 mostly small firms in two counties. LA County leans to media and consumer internet; Orange County to chips, hardware and business software.

This page is for readers who need Los Angeles tech companies as a list, not a ranking: a business choosing a developer or IT partner, a job seeker, an investor, or a B2B seller whose customers are tech firms. It covers the Census count for the two-county metro, the public companies in each county, the official data that names the rest and how to work through it.

How many tech companies are in Los Angeles

County Business Patterns (CBP), the Census Bureau's annual count of businesses with employees, puts 9,803 tech establishments in the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA Metro Area (CBSA 31080) for 2023. Tech means four NAICS industry groups: software publishers (5112), computer systems design and related services (5415), data processing, hosting and related services (518) and other information services (5191).

LA County's list is consumer apps, marketplaces and ad tech around Santa Monica, plus business software in Glendale and Woodland Hills. Orange County's largest are chips and electronics makers in Irvine and Santa Ana, the kind of company the Census Bureau counts as a manufacturer, so it's outside the 9,803. The Westside and Irvine are worth treating as separate territories.

One caution on growth: Los Angeles County's annual financial report shows Information sector employment, which here includes film and television, at 189,900 on 30 June 2025, down from 230,500 in 2016. Tech hiring in LA isn't a straight line up.

What kind of tech companies

Data processing, hosting and related services (518)84722,077

Software publishers are the largest employer group, at about 40 employees per site. The 931 other information services establishments are mostly internet publishing and web search portals (859 sites, 24,910 employees): streaming, social and digital media companies that a software-only count would miss. The 3,565 custom programming firms average only eight employees, so most are small studios and agencies.

Finding Los Angeles tech companies by name

SourceWhat it gives you
City of LA Listing of Active BusinessesEvery business registered with the City's Office of Finance, with NAICS code, description and address; updated monthly. Filter to 5415, 5182 and 5132. City of LA only
California Secretary of State business recordsEntity status, agent and officer names, with free online access to filed images
CalPrivacy Data Broker RegistryBusinesses that meet the state's definition of a data broker must register every year, in January; the registry is downloadable
LAEDCThe county's economic development corporation, with regional industry research
Orange County Business CouncilOrange County's business leadership group and its economic reports

The City listing is the most complete free list for the city itself. It uses current NAICS codes, so software publishers appear under 5132 and hosting under 5182 rather than the older codes in the Census table. For Santa Monica, Irvine and the rest of the region, use the state's business records.

Choosing an LA tech partner

QuestionWhy it matters here
Is the firm registered where it says?Check the City listing or the state's records; many small studios work under trade names
Does it handle personal data for you?If it meets the state's definition of a data broker, it should appear in the CalPrivacy registry
Who does the work? With 72% of establishments under five employees, ask who is on your project and who backs them up
Has it built for your sector?Media, health and retail clients need different things; ask for two references in yours
What happens at the end?Code ownership, handover documents and data deletion, in the contract

Orange County's top-employer list hints at where the large buyers are: its 2025 financial report ranks The Walt Disney Co. first with 36,000 employees, followed by UC Irvine and Providence Southern California.

Prospecting Los Angeles tech companies

With 8,811 establishments under 20 employees, most of the LA market is owner-run and price-sensitive: short messages, clear pricing, quick trials. The 734 with 20 to 99 have functional leaders (marketing, engineering, operations) who buy within their budgets. The 258 with 100 or more add procurement. Split territories by county and corridor, and look for triggers such as a funding round, a product launch, a new studio or content partnership, and hiring.

Worked example: a product video studio

Illustrative example. The company, people and rates are fictional, to show the method.

Marquee Demo Studio (marqueedemo.example) makes product demo and explainer videos for software companies, using LA crews. It targets software publishers and programming firms with 10 to 99 employees in both counties.

  • Establishments with 10 to 99 employees: 708 + 503 + 231 = 1,442.
  • Software publishers and custom programmers are 4,584 of 9,803 establishments (47%), so about 675 of those 1,442.
  • Marquee assumes a quarter sell a product with a self-serve trial, where demo videos matter most: about 170 accounts.
  • At 40 a month and a 6% reply-to-meeting rate, that's two or three meetings a month.

Telling product companies from agencies means reading every website. Bebop takes "Los Angeles and Orange County software companies with 10 to 99 employees that offer a free trial" and returns matches with a playbook for each.

What the count covers

CBP counts establishments, single locations with at least one paid employee, for the week of March 12, 2023. A company with offices in Santa Monica and Irvine counts twice, freelancers aren't counted, and tech teams at studios, aerospace firms and retailers count under their employers' industries.

Next step: build your list with how to build a prospect list, or compare the Bay Area in tech companies in San Francisco.
