Short answer
The El Paso metro had 711 trucking establishments in 2023, employing 7,599 people on a $430 million payroll (Census County Business Patterns), and 444 of them were long-distance truckload carriers. FMCSA's register lists 2,100 for-hire carriers in the metro with a filing updated in the last two years, plus 372 based in Ciudad Juárez. To vet one, check its USDOT record in SAFER, its TxDMV number for loads within Texas, and who handles the Mexican leg.
- El Paso's 711 trucking establishments employ 7,599 people; 69% have fewer than five employees.
- Long-distance truckload is 62% of El Paso's trucking establishments, against 45% in Texas as a whole.
- The Ysleta, El Paso and Tornillo ports took 842,659 inbound trucks in 2025, 11.1% of the US-Mexico border total.
- 372 for-hire carriers with a Ciudad Juárez address have a current FMCSA filing, all registered for interstate work.
- The metro's largest registered fleets run a few hundred trucks; none passes 500 power units.

The border sets the pace
The Bureau of Transportation Statistics publishes US Customs and Border Protection counts of inbound crossings at each port of entry. It counts trucks entering the United States only; outbound trucks aren't recorded.
| Port (BTS name) | Inbound trucks, 2024 | Inbound trucks, 2025 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ysleta | 670,627 | 641,729 | -4.3% |
| El Paso | 133,841 | 164,255 | +22.7% |
| Tornillo | 20,840 | 36,675 | +76.0% |
| El Paso's three ports | 825,308 | 842,659 | +2.1% |
That is about 2,300 trucks a day, and 11.1% of the 7,589,315 inbound trucks on the whole US-Mexico border in 2025. Santa Teresa, just across the New Mexico line, handled another 171,932. For January to September 2026, El Paso's three ports took 657,472 trucks, 3.4% more than in the same months of 2025.
The Borderplex Alliance, the economic development agency for El Paso, Ciudad Juárez and Las Cruces, lists Class I rail service from Union Pacific and BNSF and El Paso's Foreign Trade Zone No. 68 among the region's freight assets. In FMCSA's register, 88% of current El Paso for-hire carriers list general freight, 30% paper products and 27% beverages. Cargo types are self-reported by carriers, and FMCSA's open-data file doesn't always match a carrier's own SAFER record, so treat these shares as indicative.
El Paso trucking in Census data
County Business Patterns 2023 covers NAICS 484 (Truck Transportation) in the El Paso, TX Metro Area (CBSA 21340). El Paso County holds 710 of the 711 establishments and 7,596 of the 7,599 jobs.
| Measure (2023) | El Paso metro |
|---|---|
| Establishments | 711 |
| Employees (week of March 12) | 7,599 |
| Annual payroll | $429,792,000 |
| Average employees per establishment | 10.7 |
| Average annual pay | $56,559 |
| Share of US establishments | 0.42% of 170,286 |
| Type of trucking (NAICS) | Establishments | Employees | Average pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long-distance truckload (484121) | 444 | 4,959 | $53,950 |
| Local general freight (484110) | 115 | 525 | $48,425 |
| Specialized local freight (484220) | 53 | 474 | $59,053 |
| Specialized long-distance (484230) | 39 | 331 | $55,541 |
| Less-than-truckload (484122) | 34 | 1,037 | $78,890 |
| Household and office moving (484210) | 26 | 273 | $31,667 |
Average pay is payroll divided by employees, our calculation. The 34 less-than-truckload terminals average 30.5 employees and pay the most. Average pay across all El Paso trucking, $56,559, is about $6,300 below the Texas figure of $62,861 from the same survey.
| Employees per establishment | Establishments |
|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | 489 |
| 5 to 9 | 90 |
| 10 to 19 | 49 |
| 20 to 49 | 49 |
| 50 to 99 | 16 |
| 100 to 249 | 17 |
| 250 or more | Not published |
The Census Bureau doesn't publish the three largest size classes for El Paso. By subtraction, 18 establishments have 100 or more employees, so one has at least 250. In broader bands: 628 have 1 to 19 employees and 65 have 20 to 99.
The Census counts establishments with paid employees. A carrier with two El Paso yards counts twice, owner-operators without staff are missing, and a Juárez carrier's Mexican operation isn't in US data at all.
What FMCSA's register adds
FMCSA's Company Census File lists every USDOT registration with the fleet, driver and cargo details the carrier reports on its MCS-150 form. In the 29 October 2026 file, 3,359 active for-hire carriers with at least one truck have an address in El Paso or Hudspeth County. Only 2,100 updated that filing in the two years to 30 October 2026, and those are the ones we count.
| Current for-hire carriers, El Paso metro | Count |
|---|---|
| All | 2,100 |
| Registered for interstate work | 1,715 (82%) |
| Intrastate only | 385 |
| One power unit | 1,118 (53%) |
| 2 to 5 power units | 633 |
| 6 to 50 power units | 317 |
| 51 to 500 power units | 32 |
| Report hazardous materials | 208 (10%) |
Nationally, about two-thirds of current for-hire registrations are interstate; in El Paso it's 82%. Across the bridges, another 372 current for-hire carriers list a Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua address, all registered for interstate operation, and 60 of them report 11 or more power units.
The largest El Paso fleets in the register
Current for-hire filings with an El Paso metro address, ranked by power units as each carrier reported them. We left out one fuel distributor whose fleet reports 103 power units and 11 drivers.
| Carrier | Power units | Drivers |
|---|---|---|
| Sky Transportation Services LLC | 424 | 223 |
| Erives Enterprises Inc | 420 | 420 |
| Russell Transport Inc | 329 | 304 |
| Goal Transports LLC (Trans-National Express) | 220 | 287 |
| SWFL Corporation (Southwest Freightlines) | 202 | 183 |
| Felher Transportation Inc | 170 | 84 |
| Munoz Trucking Inc | 149 | 156 |
| E D C Transportation LLC | 132 | 180 |
| Tabet Enterprises Inc (Ameritrans) | 99 | 108 |
| International Transportation Services Inc | 91 | 91 |
No SEC-listed trucking company is headquartered in the El Paso metro, so the register is the best public measure of size here. Power units include tractors that the carrier owns, leases long term or leases by the trip, which is why some counts run ahead of drivers.
How to vet an El Paso carrier
- Search the USDOT number in FMCSA's SAFER Company Snapshot. Look at power units, drivers, cargo classes and the out-of-service rates from roadside inspections, then confirm operating authority and insurance in Licensing and Insurance.
- For loads that stay in Texas, check the carrier in TxDMV's Motor Carrier Lookup. A TxDMV number is required for intrastate vehicles over 26,000 pounds, placarded hazmat and household goods moves, with $500,000 of liability cover for most carriers over 26,000 pounds; the Texas trucking report has the full list.
- Map the whole move. Ask which company pulls the trailer across, which bridge it uses, who the customs broker is and where the trailer waits. A US carrier and a Juárez partner should each have their own SAFER record.
- Check the trailer pool, not only the trucks: border carriers often swap trailers at transfer yards, and your freight's security depends on that yard.
- Start with one lane and measure transit time, including the bridge, before you commit volume.
Selling to El Paso trucking companies
| Fleet size (power units) | Carriers | Who decides | What they buy |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 5 | 1,751 | The owner | Insurance, permits, factoring, tires, ELD hardware |
| 6 to 50 | 317 | Owner with a dispatcher or safety lead | Compliance help, trailer tracking, maintenance, driver hiring |
| 51 to 500 | 32 | Operations, safety and maintenance managers | Fleet software, yard security, equipment, insurance programs |
Crossing data is the timing signal. When volume rises at a port, as it did at the El Paso port and Tornillo in 2025, carriers add trailers and drivers, and their compliance and maintenance load rises with them. For building the target list itself, see how to build a prospect list.
Illustrative example. The seller and its rates are invented; the counts are FMCSA register and BTS data.
Franklin Mountain Compliance (franklinmtn.example) audits hours-of-service logs, driver files and drug-testing records for small carriers, in English and Spanish. Its list is El Paso's 950 current for-hire carriers with 2 to 50 power units: past the point where the owner can keep every file, short of a full-time safety hire. With one contact each (the owner) and a 5% reply rate, that's 47 conversations; if one in four buys a first audit, 12 clients, most of whom will need it again next year. Bebop can find carriers that match that description and research each one before the call.

Questions people ask
How many trucking companies are in El Paso?
Census County Business Patterns counted 711 trucking establishments in the El Paso metro in 2023, employing 7,599 people, almost all in El Paso County. That counts locations with paid employees, so owner-operators are missing. FMCSA's register lists 2,100 for-hire carriers with a metro address and a filing updated in the last two years, and 1,118 of them run one truck.
What are the biggest trucking companies in El Paso?
By power units in FMCSA's register, the largest for-hire fleets based in the El Paso metro are Sky Transportation Services (424 power units), Erives Enterprises (420) and Russell Transport (329), followed by Goal Transports, which does business as Trans-National Express (220), and SWFL Corporation, or Southwest Freightlines (202). The figures are self-reported on each carrier's MCS-150 filing. No SEC-listed trucking company is based in the metro.
How many trucks cross the border at El Paso?
Bureau of Transportation Statistics data from US Customs and Border Protection show 842,659 inbound truck crossings at El Paso's three commercial ports in 2025: 641,729 at Ysleta, 164,255 at the port BTS calls El Paso and 36,675 at Tornillo. That is about 2,300 a day and 11.1% of all inbound trucks on the US-Mexico border. Outbound trucks are not counted.
Are Ciudad Juárez trucking companies registered with FMCSA?
Many are. FMCSA's Company Census File lists 372 for-hire carriers with a Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua address and at least one truck that updated their filing in the two years to October 2026, all registered for interstate operation. Check a Juárez carrier the way you would any other: its USDOT record in SAFER, its authority and insurance, and its inspection history.
Do El Paso trucking companies need a TxDMV number?
For work within Texas, yes, if they run a vehicle or combination rated over 26,000 pounds, haul hazardous materials that need placards, carry more than 15 passengers, operate farm vehicles of 48,000 pounds or more, or move household goods for pay. Most carriers over 26,000 pounds must keep at least $500,000 of liability insurance on file with TxDMV. Interstate carriers also need FMCSA registration.
