The 10 biggest companies headquartered in Pittsburgh
Ranked by revenue in each company's latest annual report on Form 10-K, using the principal executive office on the filing's cover. PNC's figure is total revenue: net interest income plus noninterest income.

| 10 | Howmet Aerospace | Pittsburgh | $8.25 billion | Dec 2025 | Engine and airframe parts |
Together they reported $160 billion. Coherent (Saxonburg, $7.12 billion in the year to June 2026) and American Eagle Outfitters ($5.55 billion) come next; the ranked list of 25, with headcounts, is on our page on the largest companies in Pittsburgh.
Two well-known names are missing because they no longer file: US Steel delisted in June 2025 and Ansys in July 2025, after their acquisitions. Both still appear on the state's employer lists, which count local jobs, not stock listings: US Steel ranks 18th in Allegheny County and Ansys 11th in Washington County. Private and nonprofit giants (UPMC, Highmark Health, Giant Eagle, Westinghouse Electric) don't file with the SEC either.
Who employs the most people: the state's Top 50 lists
Pennsylvania's Center for Workforce Information and Analysis publishes a ranked Top 50 Employers list for every county each quarter, built from unemployment insurance records (the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages). It gives ranks, not counts. Allegheny County, 1st quarter 2026 (published August 2026):
| Rank | Employer | Rank | Employer |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside | 11 | Wal-Mart Associates |
| 2 | University of Pittsburgh | 12 | School District of Pittsburgh |
| 3 | Federal government | 13 | State government |
| 4 | Western Penn Allegheny Health | 14 | Bank of New York Mellon |
| 5 | PNC Bank | 15 | Amazon.com Services |
| 6 | Giant Eagle | 16 | UPMC Physician Ops and Prof Svcs |
| 7 | Allegheny County | 17 | City of Pittsburgh |
| 8 | Carnegie Mellon University | 18 | United States Steel Corporation |
| 9 | Allegheny Clinic | 19 | UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh |
| 10 | University of Pittsburgh Physicians | 20 | UPMC Health Plan |
The list counts legal employers, so one health system can appear many times: entities with UPMC in their name hold nine of the 50 places, and Highmark Health ranks 48th. Outside Allegheny County, the same lists put different names on top: Walmart in Westmoreland County (with Westinghouse Electric seventh), Pathways of Southwestern PA in Washington County, and the federal government in Butler County, where Westinghouse ranks fourth and AK Steel fifth.
How many businesses are in Pittsburgh
The Census Bureau's County Business Patterns (CBP) counts business locations with paid employees. For the Pittsburgh, PA Metro Area (CBSA 38300) in 2023:
| Measure | Pittsburgh metro, 2023 |
|---|---|
| Establishments | 61,628 |
| Employees | 1,122,366 |
| Annual payroll | $71,605,509,000 |
| Average employees per establishment | 18.2 |
| Average annual pay | $63,799 |
| Share of US establishments | 0.74% (of 8,361,342) |
| Employees at the establishment | Establishments |
|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | 30,883 |
| 5 to 9 | 12,198 |
| 10 to 19 | 8,295 |
| 20 to 49 | 6,431 |
| 50 to 99 | 2,233 |
| 100 to 249 | 1,118 |
| 250 to 499 | 309 |

| 1,000 or more | 73 |
That's 51,376 locations with 1 to 19 employees, 8,664 with 20 to 99 and 1,588 with 100 or more.
| County | Establishments | Employees |
|---|---|---|
| Allegheny | 33,812 | 709,774 |
| Westmoreland | 8,428 | 124,843 |
| Washington | 5,340 | 84,410 |
| Butler | 5,083 | 86,610 |

| Fayette | 2,485 | 31,590 |
| Lawrence | 1,865 | 24,349 |
| Armstrong | 1,288 | 14,258 |
CBP counts establishments, not companies, and leaves out the self-employed, businesses with no payroll and government. Employment is for the pay period including March 12, 2023, and the figures cover all industries.
What kinds of companies Pittsburgh has
| Sector (NAICS) | Establishments | Employees | Average pay | Sites with 1,000+ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Health care and social assistance (62) | 8,680 | 217,914 | $59,084 | 24 |
| Retail trade (44 to 45) | 7,718 | 123,006 | $34,333 | not published |
| Accommodation and food services (72) | 5,828 | 100,137 | $22,097 | not published |
| Professional, scientific and technical services (54) | 6,278 | 87,252 | $97,068 | 8 |
| Manufacturing (31 to 33) | 2,371 | 85,875 | $74,465 | 5 |
| Finance and insurance (52) | 3,517 | 63,346 | $104,339 | 10 |
| Management of companies (55) | 562 | 62,636 | $94,476 | 9 |
| Educational services (61) | 812 | 61,414 | $47,021 | 5 |
| Construction (23) | 5,711 | 59,137 | $77,828 | not published |
| Mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction (21) | 247 | 7,819 | $128,849 | not published |
Average pay is our calculation: payroll divided by employees. Three things stand out. Health care alone has 24 of the metro's 73 sites with 1,000 or more employees. Corporate and regional management offices employ 62,636 people, nearly as many as finance and more than construction, which is what a headquarters city looks like in the data. And the 247 mining and gas sites are few but pay almost as much as the information sector ($131,255), reflecting the Marcellus Shale producers around EQT and CNX. Deeper cuts are in our reports on Pittsburgh tech companies and Pittsburgh construction companies.
How to check a Pittsburgh company
| Source | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Pennsylvania Department of State, business services | Business name search for registered entities, plus professional license verification |
| Top 50 Employers, Allegheny County | The state's ranked employer list, updated quarterly; the same file exists for each county |
| Pittsburgh Regional Alliance | The region's economic development group, now combined with the Allegheny Conference and the Greater Pittsburgh Chamber, with expansion news and industry profiles |
| Allegheny County | County services, permits and procurement |
| SEC EDGAR, Pennsylvania filers | 10-Ks with revenue, headcount and risks for public companies |
For a supplier, check the registered entity and its standing first, then any license the work needs (the Department of State's verification tool covers state-licensed professions), then references from a client your size.
Prospecting Pittsburgh companies
The Allegheny County list tells you where the buying power sits: health systems, universities, government and a handful of large private employers. The 51,376 small locations buy differently, mostly through an owner or office manager. Between those, the 8,664 firms with 20 to 99 employees are where a regional supplier usually wins.
Illustrative example. The company, prices and results are fictional, to show the method.
Allegheny Workwear (alleghenyworkwear.example), a uniform and safety-supply service in Cranberry Township, wants manufacturers outside Allegheny County.
- Count the market: the metro has 2,371 manufacturing establishments, and the seven outer counties hold 45.1% of all establishments, so it estimates about 1,070 plants outside Allegheny.
- Narrow by fit: it assumes 35% have 20 or more production workers, about 375 plants.
- Set a pace: 60 new plants a month, so the list is covered in about six months.
- Size the prize: at $1,200 a month per plant and a 4% win rate, 15 new accounts add about $216,000 a year.
Its opening line uses what the plant already shows publicly: a recent expansion, a hiring push or a safety citation. Finding which of the 375 plants is expanding is the slow part; Bebop can search for "Butler, Westmoreland and Washington County manufacturers with 20 to 249 employees that are hiring production workers" and explain why each fits.
Subject: Workwear and PPE for [Company]'s second shift Hi [first name], Saw that [Company] is hiring for a second shift in [town]. New hires on a new shift is usually when sizing, PPE stock and laundry pickups get missed. We service 40 plants across Butler, Westmoreland and Washington counties on a weekly route, with one invoice. Would a quick walk-through of your current setup be useful? [Your name], Allegheny Workwear
Next step: turn these counts into a target list with how to build a prospect list.

Questions people ask
What are the biggest companies in Pittsburgh?
By revenue in their latest 10-Ks, the largest public companies headquartered in the Pittsburgh metro are Kraft Heinz ($24.94 billion in 2025), Wesco International ($23.51 billion), PNC Financial Services ($23.10 billion), Dick's Sporting Goods in Coraopolis ($17.22 billion in the year to January 2026) and PPG Industries ($15.88 billion). Viatris, Alcoa, Wabtec, EQT and Howmet Aerospace complete the top ten.
Who is the largest employer in Pittsburgh?
On Pennsylvania's Top 50 Employers list for Allegheny County (1st quarter 2026), UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside ranks first and the University of Pittsburgh second, followed by the federal government, Western Penn Allegheny Health, PNC Bank and Giant Eagle. The list counts legal employers, so UPMC's other entities appear separately; nine of the top 50 places carry the UPMC name.
How many businesses are in Pittsburgh?
The Census Bureau counted 61,628 business establishments with paid employees in the Pittsburgh metro area in 2023, employing 1,122,366 people with $71.6 billion in annual payroll. Allegheny County had 33,812 of them. The count covers locations, not companies, and leaves out the self-employed, so the number of registered businesses is higher.
Is US Steel still headquartered in Pittsburgh?
United States Steel Corporation still ranks 18th on Pennsylvania's Top 50 Employers list for Allegheny County (1st quarter 2026), so it remains a major local employer. But it no longer files with the SEC: its shares were delisted in June 2025 and it deregistered on 30 June 2025 after its acquisition, so it doesn't appear in rankings built from public filings.
How do I look up a business in Pennsylvania?
Use the Pennsylvania Department of State's business services, which include a business name search for registered corporations and LLCs and a separate tool to verify professional and occupational licenses. Public companies' annual reports, with revenue and headcount, are on SEC EDGAR.
