This report is for job seekers, suppliers, contract partners and sellers looking at Michigan's drug companies. It gives the state's Census figures, the sites FDA has on file, the listed companies checked in their own filings, and a plan for selling into a market where a few large plants matter more than the total count.
Michigan in the Census data
County Business Patterns (CBP) 2023, NAICS 3254 (Pharmaceutical and Medicine Manufacturing), Michigan:
| Measure (2023) | Michigan |
|---|---|
| Establishments | 80 |
| Employees | 13,577 |
| Annual payroll | $1,278,377,000 |
| Average employees per establishment | 169.7 |
| Average annual pay | $94,158 |
| Share of US establishments | 2.76% of 2,901 |
| Rank among states by establishments | 10th |
| Employees per establishment | Establishments |
|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | 22 |
| 5 to 9 | 16 |
| 10 to 19 | 6 |
| 20 to 49 | 11 |
| 50 to 99 | 6 |
| 100 to 249 | 10 |
| 250 to 499 | 4 |
| 500 to 999 | 2 (derived) |
| 1,000 or more | 3 |
The Census Bureau doesn't publish the 500 to 999 cell for Michigan; the 2 is the total less the published classes. More than half the establishments (44) have fewer than 20 employees, but the 19 with 100 or more hold most of the jobs, including three with 1,000 or more.
As with all CBP data, these are establishments with a payroll, not companies, and businesses without employees are left out. The code also leaves out drug distribution and research: Michigan has 114 drug wholesale establishments (NAICS 424210) with 3,329 employees and 78 biotechnology R&D establishments (NAICS 541714) with 1,693, both far smaller than the plant workforce. That's the reverse of Massachusetts or San Diego.
What the plants make and where
| Six-digit code | Establishments | Employees |
|---|---|---|
| Pharmaceutical preparations (325412) | 37 | 7,432 |
| Medicinal and botanical (325411) | 33 | 1,008 |
| Biologics (325414) | 6 | 5,076 |
| In-vitro diagnostic substances (325413) | 4 | not reported (high-noise figure) |
| County | Establishments | Employees |
|---|---|---|
| Oakland | 17 | 647 |
| Wayne | 10 | 1,675 |
| Kent | 9 | 4,412 |
| Ingham | 9 | not reported (high-noise figure) |
| Macomb | 6 | 34 |
| Kalamazoo | 5 | not reported (high-noise figure) |
| Ottawa | 3 | 1,006 |
| Washtenaw | 3 | 137 |
"Not reported" means the Census Bureau published the figure but flagged it as high-noise: its confidentiality noise moved the value by 5% or more. Oakland County has the most establishments but small ones; Kent and Ottawa in West Michigan have fewer, much larger sites.
The sites FDA has on file
FDA keeps a public register of drug establishments, the Drug Establishments Current Registration Site (DECRS). From the file as downloaded on 30 October 2026:
| Registered drug establishments in Michigan | Count |
|---|---|
| All registrations | 140 |
| List manufacturing or API manufacturing | 107 |
| of which medical gas suppliers (our count by firm name) | 26 |
| of which API manufacturing | 16 |
| Pack, label, repack or relabel only | 14 |
| Testing (analysis) only | 8 |
| Medicated animal feed | 6 |
| PET drug production | 5 |
Grand Rapids has the most registrations (14), then Ann Arbor (7), Kalamazoo and Midland (5 each). The large registrants include Pharmacia & Upjohn Company (7000 Portage Road, Kalamazoo, registered by Pfizer Inc), Zoetis (Kalamazoo), L. Perrigo Company (Allegan and Holland), Emergent BioDefense Operations Lansing (Lansing), AbbVie (Wyandotte), Grand River Aseptic Manufacturing (four Grand Rapids-area registrations), Par Health and King Pharmaceuticals (Rochester), Corium Innovations (Grand Rapids) and SPI Pharma (Grand Haven). The manufacturing count also includes 19 registrations by CareLinc Medical Equipment, a home medical equipment supplier, at branches across the state. Companies file these registrations themselves; FDA doesn't approve them.
The companies' 10-Ks add detail. Zoetis says its largest R&D and manufacturing facilities are its owned sites in the Kalamazoo area, about 1.6 million square feet, 0.9 million of it R&D. AbbVie lists Wyandotte among its significant manufacturing sites. Perrigo, incorporated in Ireland with headquarters in Dublin, says its North American base of operations is in Grand Rapids; it reported $4,253.1 million of 2025 net sales and about 8,100 employees worldwide.
Listed companies headquartered in Michigan
EDGAR's match finds only 4 listed companies in SIC codes 2833 to 2836 with a Michigan business address; we added Esperion, which the match missed. Checked in each latest 10-K:
| Company | Headquarters (10-K cover) | Revenue, latest year | Employees reported |
|---|---|---|---|
| Neogen (food and animal safety tests) | Lansing | $870.4 million (year to May 2026) | 2,636, 1,346 in North America |
| Esperion Therapeutics | Ann Arbor | $403.1 million (2025) | 294 full-time |
| Rockwell Medical | Wixom | $69.3 million (2025) | 157 |
| Zomedica (animal health) | Ann Arbor | $32.0 million (2025) | 141 |

Checking a Michigan drug company
- State licence. FDA lists the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) as the agency that licenses wholesale drug distributors; its license lookup searches by name.
- FDA record. The Data Dashboard shows inspections, warning letters and recalls for each firm.
- Industry groups. MichBio, the state's bioscience association since 1993, and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation are the starting points for introductions and expansion news.
For job seekers, the county table is the map: Kent, Ottawa, Kalamazoo and Wayne counties host the large sites, while Oakland's 17 establishments average under 40 employees.
Selling to Michigan's drug plants
| Account type | Examples | Who decides |
|---|---|---|
| Large integrated sites | Pfizer's Kalamazoo site, Zoetis, Perrigo Allegan | Site leadership, engineering, quality, global procurement |
| Contract and sterile manufacturers | Grand River Aseptic Manufacturing, Emergent Lansing | Site head, operations and quality directors |
| Listed mid-size companies | Esperion, Neogen, Rockwell Medical | Supply chain and operations vice presidents |
| Small makers (44 under 20 staff) | Botanical and specialty chemical firms | The owner |
Worked example: an automation integrator
Illustrative example. The integrator and its prices are invented; the counts come from CBP 2023.
Lakeshore Controls (lakeshorecontrols.example) upgrades packaging and process control systems to meet FDA electronic records rules.
- Pick the accounts. The 19 establishments with 100 or more employees.
- Map each site. Name the site head, the engineering manager and the automation lead; at sites this size expect all three to be involved.
- Do the arithmetic. Reaching the engineering lead at 15 of the 19 sites, 4 agree to a site assessment and 2 commission a project at $250,000: $500,000 of work.
Mapping three people at each of 19 sites is the research that takes the time; Bebop researches each account in a list and suggests who to contact and the angle to open with.
